FOOD AND STRESS.

In times of stress it is important to eat a healthy diet to reduce stress. Some food and drink can boost the body. That itself is not bad, but this can be very stressful if the body is already very tense.

Rather not:

Caffeine

Caffeine is present in coffee, tea, chocolate and cola and similar drinks. Caffeine is responsible for the release of adrenalin, and thereby promotes the increase of stress. As a matter of fact, much coffee can ensure that you are very tense and anxious, even without a direct source of stress. Because the same goes for decaffeinated coffee this is not a good alternative. Decaf coffee contains substances that also provide for the release of stress hormones.

Also does coffee give a reduced quality of sleep, which in itself is also a source of stress.

It is recommended to drink less coffee when you are tense.

Sugar

Sugar has no nutritional value. It only gives a brief burst of energy, and invokes the adrenal glands (which produce the stress hormones adrenalin and noradrenalin). Anyway it is recommended to sparsely use sugar. Try not to use sugar as a pick me up, and as little as possible in times of stress.

But rather:

Carbohydrate

Carbohydrates stimulate the release of the neurotransmitter serotonin, which has a calming effect. Serotonin reduces tension and anxiety. Sources of carbohydrates include rice, pasta, potatoes and bread.

Fibres

Because in stress the most blood is sent to the muscles and very little energy and blood is used for digestion, problems can occur in the intestines; like cramps and constipation. Therefore, try to use fiber to stimulate the digestive system. Eat fruits, vegetables and grains.
