IS STRESS ALWAYS BAD?

As you may have read at general adaptation syndrome having long-term stress is certainly not good. According to the adaptation syndrome by Selye the organism will ultimately be exhausted, which can lead to illness and even death.

Apparently, the duration of stress seems to be important. How long can a person take stress? Intensity of stress also plays a role in answering the question whether stress is always bad.

This varies, as with many things, individually and this question is so difficult to answer.

When a certain performance or exertion has to be made, e.g. a sportsman, a certain amount of stress is desirable or even necessary. Imagine that you have to give a presentation about your company to a group of potential customers. Or you are standing in front of a class for the first time. The sportsman mentioned before, who is going onto the pitch. The problem is often the amount of stress; too little or too much will go at the expense of the performance.

Stress is hence necessary to achieve a certain performance.

Stress can be split into two groups: good stress and bad stress. But what is bad stress? Well, bad stress is determined by you! Stress is only bad if emotions start playing a big role if one labels stress or the source of stress as negative. What means the end of the world for one person, means another opportunity for the other.
